About Pomona Farming

Pomona Farming is a California-based agricultural company that grows and supplies clean nut and fruit ingredients across 100,000 acres. It has also expanded beyond California through Mahi Pono, a Maui joint venture that converted 41,000 acres of former sugar cane land to diversified agriculture, as well as an investment in Italian almond processor Alfrus SRL.

With four locations in California, two in Hawaii, and approximately 200 employees across all sites, Pomona Farming operates a broad agricultural portfolio while maintaining strict supply chain and quality standards. 

The Challenge

Pomona Farming faced three interconnected infrastructure challenges as the organization grew. Its legacy Meraki routing platform couldn't provide the standardization needed across every location or the security to protect sensitive agricultural and operational data. And as the company's workforce became increasingly distributed, it lacked secure remote access controls for employees working offsite.

Ultimately, Pomona needed a platform that could unify its network, provide comprehensive security, and support a modern distributed workforce – all while maintaining the reliability its agricultural operations depended on.

The Solution

Pomona Farming's VP of IT, Nelson Saenz, had worked with Aseva on a Cato transformation project previously, and turned to us once again for a comprehensive network and security strategy centered on Cato Networks.

The Aseva team deployed Cato X-series sockets across all six locations to replace Pomona's legacy Meraki system. Mission-critical sites received high-availability Cato configurations and secondary internet connections to maximize redundancy, along with Cato's SD-WAN capabilities automatically managing traffic between circuits to ensure optimal performance and continuous availability.

For remote workforce security, Aseva deployed the Cato ZTNA client to all 200 employees, ensuring that users working outside Pomona's facilities were protected by comprehensive security policies regardless of location. We also layered multiple controls across the platform, including:

  • Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) capabilities to prevent shadow IT and control what employees can do on approved websites.
  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP) to ensure critical agricultural and operational information isn't sent over the internet.
  • Threat prevention tools like anti-malware, intrusion prevention, and DNS security for all sites and users.
  • AI User Security to provide visibility into what AI tools employees are using, with AI DLP flagging potential policy violations.
